Akshay Sethi, who is all set to stage a grand come back in the popular serial ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ shortly tells Jyothi Venkatesh that he is glad that he did not seek his father’s help to launch him as an actor though his father was a producer besides being Vinod Khanna’s secretary in his heydays of yore
Is ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ your first TV serial as an actor?
No. It is in fact my fourth serial as an actor. I had made my debut with ‘Saat Phere’. Then followed my stint with ‘Dhoom Macha Dhoom’ on Disney TV. After ‘Dhoom Macha Dhoom’, I acted in ‘Rahe Tera Ashirwad’ on Colors.
Do you have any aversion to play negative roles on TV?
It has been a conscious decision on my part to take up only positive roles as an actor. I said no to Diya and Tony Singh when they approached me with the offer to cast in a negative role in ‘Annu Ki Ho Gayi Wah Bhai Wah’.
What do you not like about TV?
What I detest about TV is the fact that it is a crime to be popular on TV, because people do not want to see the face after the show is over, because of overexposure. Though I have done four serials till date, I am not over exposed. Actors like Sharad Malhotra and Rajshri Thakur are over exposed but Vivan Bhathena isn’t.
Why has your character been eased out of ‘Sasural Genda Phool’?
I play a double role in the show. I was earlier seen as a 35 year old ayyash who buys a girl from her husband and rapes her. I agreed to do the role because of the immense scope I got as an actor though it was a negative role. I also play an innocent young boy whose mother hates him, because he is the product of the rape and keeps him in the hostel. Because I do not get love even from my mother, I am in the shell and when my mother ignores me, I walk out of the house. The producer has promised that I would return in the serial in a big way.
Are you aiming at films?
When I thought of taking up acting, I said good work matters, whether it is on TV or films. I did an ad for Limca. The producers of Sphere Origins saw the ad and offered me a role in ‘Saat Phere’. I want to take my career in a different level and not be limited to television alone, though I will always be open for good offers on TV.
What is your motto?
My motto is to do a good character in a good show than a lead character in a flop show.
In what way did your stint in ‘Sasural Genda Phool’ help you?
The kind of popularity that I did not get in ‘Rahe Tera Aashirwad’ even after acting in 200 episodes, I managed to get after acing in just four episodes of ‘Sasural Genda Phool’.
Did you take the help of any Godfather to get offers to act in serials?
Though my dad was Vinod Khanna’s secretary and has also produed films in Hindi, I did not seek his help at all. My dad says that he is proud of the fact that though he did not help me or my brother, who is a photographer in his own right, both of us brothers have bagged our assignments on the basis of our own merits.
